History of the Mariánské Barracks

The construction of the Mariánské Barracks, the oldest military building in České Budějovice, began in 1842, lasted approximately two years and was financed by the townspeople of České Budějovice. After the completion of the building in 1844, the barracks served its purpose for almost one hundred and fifty years. In 1888 and 1890 the Mariánské barracks, as well as the whole town, were hit by massive floods.

Fráňa Šrámek in Mariánské barracks

In 1883-1918 the barracks housed the 91st Infantry Regiment. It was a garrison prison, and until 1901 executions took place in the yard. The poet Fráňa Šrámek was imprisoned in the barracks for his anti-militarist attitudes. The poet and novelist served his sentence in the military prison between 1899 and 1901. He later lived in Budějovice and published his poems. He probably also wrote his posthumously published collection Rozbolestněný ženami there. In 1946 he was named a national artist.

Jaroslav Hašek in Mariánské barracks

The most famous soldier in the Mariánské Barracks was the writer Jaroslav Hašek, although he stayed in the barracks for only three months from 17 February to 10 May 1915. He enlisted in the 91st Regiment and then was sent from there to join his mother regiment in Bruck nad Litavkou. Perhaps that is why the plot of Švejk was also partly set in Budějovice. A plaque commemorates his stay in this building. "I obediently report, Mr. Armourer, that I am here again," saluted Svejk, his face solemn. With these words, Švejk's famous Budějovice anabasis comes to an end.
